Do Better Things
“But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner.” (Hebrews 6:9)
We don’t know for sure who wrote Hebrews, but one thing we do know is the writer wrote things to them they needed to hear. Firm even hard things, yet the writer loved the people he wrote too, and was confident of better things concerning them. Having confidence in people encourages them and makes a difference in their performance. This is what God has done for us even before time. He was so confident in our ability and willingness, that He put confidence in us to do good works as God Himself has done. (Ephesians 2:10) His love for us bred the ultimate confidence in mankind, that manifested itself in God sending His only son to die for us (John 3:16). There are some things in Hebrews 5:9-14, 6:1-8 we all need to aware of today that are things Christians dealt with then, that we should be aware of and commit to not do because we are called to better things…things that accompany salvation.
• Becoming dull of hearing
• Failing to be able to teach the first principles
• An unclear understanding of what is good and what is evil
• Never moving on past elementary principles
• Having received the heavenly gift/salvation falling away and bearing no fruit
We are better than these things…we can be confident of better things concerning ourselves, concerning our salvation! We can do better, we can grow more, we can become a teacher, we can know what is good and evil, and we can mature and learn more than basic principles. Finally, having received the heavenly gift, we can no longer put our Lord to an open shame by sinful living or a lack of teaching. We can become more like Him every day (Galatians 2:20).
We can bear fruit, be useful to our Lord and receive blessings from Him. Today let’s do better things! The things that accompany our salvation!
