Today Matters

Mark Twain on procrastination: “Don’t put off till tomorrow what may be done day after tomorrow just as well.” A lot of us buy into that way of thinking. And while waiting until the last minute may allow you to squeak by with a “C” in World History, it won’t allow for a passing grade when it comes to more important matters.

Like your health. -Or your family health. -Or your spiritual health.

In procrastination, we become our own worst enemy. It’s true in every area of life. We want our marriages to be better, yet put off taking the proactive steps to make it happen. We want our relationships with our children to be become stronger, yet day after day goes by and nothing changes. We want to get a handle on finances by reducing debt, yet those credit cards continue to be a temptation. We want to know God better and get into His Word more regularly, yet another day of putting out the fires of the urgent have left us exhausted and empty (again). We want to get in better shape physically and take care of the temple called “the body,” but we find every reason (excuse) to put if off. Tomorrow, we keep telling ourselves. Tomorrow will be different.

 No it won’t.

If you are waiting until tomorrow to do anything, you’ve already lost the battle. This battle is won on the day you set your face to do something about it. And that day is…today.

“Today is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Ps.118:24).

“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will take care of itself” (Matt.7:34).

“Make the most of your time, because the days are evil” (Phil.5:16).

“Behold now is the acceptable time, behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor.6:2).

Each of these verses denotes the important of one day: today. Yes, today matters.
