Being The Light of The World

When we count how many lights there are in a room, it's easy to not count the lights that are currently not illuminated. John 1 tells us that Jesus is the true light that was brought to the world and that all men are illuminated by Him. Matthew 5:14ff tells us that we are the light of the world. Given the nature of lamps and alters in biblical times, there was much effort put into keeping those lights lit. Are we treating our lights like those lights? Or are we treating our own lights like today's temporary and easy "flip of the switch"?
